Victoria is the second-smallest territory of Australia; it just takes up 3 percent of the total area of the continent. The capital is Melbourne with approximately 3.7 million inhabitants.
Roughly speaking Victoria consists of two regions. On the one hand desert like areas in the northeast and on the other hand the cool rainforest areas of the southeast. The lowland of the Western Districts contain the best grassland of Australia. North of the Western Districts lies the driest, flattest and hottest part of Victoria, characterized by numerous wheat fields and sheep herds. The spectacular Alpine areas in the northeast of Victoria comprise many elevated plains.
The Gippsland region extends in the southeast of Victoria with many hills covered by juicy grass and productive milk farms, as well as the remote National Parks and the extensive forests of East Gippsland.
The coastline is divided between endless sandy beaches and brusque cliffs. Here the famous Great Ocean Road winds directly along the coast. One should difinitely not miss the 12 Apostles, the London bridge and the Otway National Park.
